  1. I only watched half of this when I posted it; got to the end and had to laugh.

  2. (It's Miss Power spoofing Sarah Palin, quite funny actually.)

  3. I like Ms. Ridgway, she's the only person on there that made the idea of 'learning' almost as interesting as the reality of 'fucking'. Yes, she was not averse to how 'when you get things wrong, you can work it again'. She was easily the best. That Coote wimmern is ridiculous, never read her Colette, who reminds that money can sho' buy you love. Anybody knows it who has decided money oughtn't to separated off from everything else. Anything can separate off, so money does it when you're taught to do it that way. Otherwise, it's easy to mix business and pleasure. Why just pay for Champagne Cocktails? I haven't got time for Mrs. Power, although she's comely enough. Thank you for posting the clip of her, she's just, like, so much more real to me now, and she says that we can all, you know, 'luhn'. Who the fuck wants to hear it? Education is the most boring subject in the wuhld. I hate to hear about it. Plus, that vaudeville-bat Pinker person said 'we remember all sorts of things that never happened', so she needs an editress, that's not possible. Who's he talking about? Satanists who remember a lower-middle-class afternoon when the kiddies saw mommy and daddy 'doing worse things than usual' and then it doesn't hold up in court, because the shrink suggested it? Then there was that other one, went on about the 'human soul'. Sort of like that bleug that never talks about anything but goddam chinese high school students. What a SAD commentary on mysterious and ambitious bleugs when the shit hits the fan! Then it seems you have to save some money so it can buy you some more happiness. But are high school kids taught this? No, they never are. They are taught that work is an ennobling Anglo-Saxonry.

  4. Pinker said something worthwhile; the guys who said "reading, writing, rithmatik" acquitted their obligation to rationality; then there were the endless platitudes, this is funny, to see people performing these banalities. Some of these people exude their entitlement, their class privilege. But some don't have it, some are middle class upwardly mobilestrivers - its interesting to me that this is as easy to see in the Americans as in the Brits; I would have thought it would be less visible because it's not signalled by the accents necessarily. But it is signalled - I just noticed. You get a sense of the "culture" that the RSA serves and reproduces from this little parade.

Somewhat amusing but not overly, that with all these idiots and the occasional heinous monster like Oliver Kamm, the only actually incoherent person is Power. She's the only one who obviously doesn't belong - even the "entrepreneur" who says self-presentation is more important than qualifications belongs to this gallery and the world it illustrates and celebrates better. Power is the only one whose remark is actually gibberish but in the required form, the sound and trappings of an "insight" and liberal individualist progressive affirmation, but the content is nonsense, just filler, the styrofoam peanuts of verbiage. - "since its an illusion that people can acquire knowledge the only thing people should know is that they can acquire knowledge." but its got this veneer of concern for "people made to feel inferior". This from the sensitive lecturer who posted what she thought were comically inept exam essays of her working class and ethnic minority students on the web to entertain her clever white petty bourgeois friends while she herself proudly advises the world "how you can be a comminist like me am."

  5. Power is the only one actually posing. She's fake. She doesn't believe what is pretending to say, she's just trying to say what she thinks will pass for an opinion. That's why she doesn't catch that what she is saying is self-contradictory. She never thought about this. It's like watching an inept con artist on her first day on the tip forgetting her lines.

  6. I have to modify - Anne Coote who claims "money can't buy satisfaction and well-being" is incoherent too. .

  8. Yes, all true about Power, but she's there with them, so she'll probably 'make it'. She's indeed like the cashier who has to tell you 'I'm starting my training today, let me call my supervisor'. The question is so fucking idiotic to begin with. Yes, I hadn't realized it was going to be a combo of Yanks and Brits, I thought it was all Brits. You may be right about Pinker, he just didn't say it right the first time, I think he probably meant 'didn't remember it properly', rather than remembered something that hadn't happened at all, which is either what he said or how it came across (I'm not going to re-watch this, it's worse than 'Ninotchka'.)

Couldn't believe the 'entrepreneur', but of course yes, she did belong. But THIS was a case in which she needed to talk to Miss Riv-ahs about some 'presentation skills', as this was not quite credible under the circumstances (I know that's a bit cruel, but then maybe she was proof that 'confidence' is often the main facet of these 'presentations'. although we know it's not nearly all. I don't think she'd require all that much work, frankly, but the Lauren Hutton Effect was not in itself going to sell.) couldn't believe the 'reading, writing, arithmetic' bidniz, that was plain jaw-dropping in an un-awesome way. Well, Ms. Power will get a few demerits and reversals, that's for sure, even in the Brave New World, but she doesn't tend to be personally depressed, and extroverts are always the perennial re-hirees. I expected her to be a bit more impressive, but she really is very 'little girl', but not odious although cutesey.

Just saw your remark on Coote. She's incoherent, but is on 3rd echelon of Rock School compared to Nina, because not everybody will think she is incoherent. People still love to hear that particular platitude, it's parallel to the '3 r's' that that fuckhead was diarrhea-ing about...I have to go to Jefferson Mkt. Library, they have a 1952 vhs with June Havoc in it, but they are trying to play games with me about it, because I scared the head librarian 9 years ago around Gay Pride Day, and also because I have wanted to see this 'All Star Revue' for 4 years, and they have made a point of not letting me get it! June Havoc was actually successful as an adult, she was 'Baby June' of 'Gypsy', huge child star and little sister of Gypsy Rose Lee. She's good in several movies, like 'Gentleman's Agreement' and 'Hi Diddle Diddle', a screwball comedy of early 40s.

yes, and its clearly very studied, because the little girl pleases men. i really don't think she is as dumd as her persona - the dumb comes in the box with the blonde. honestly nobody is, the existence of young women like nina power's persona is a sexist myth itself. i don't know of course but it would not surprise me if she can cry convincingly during arguments.

"Lauren Hutton Effect was not in itself going to sell"

it's england! she's in i think franchised retail or something, not showbiz! i don't think the teeth are a handicap though in the US presumably she'd have them fixed. I had a gap between my front teeth; not that big but big. Lauren Hutton sized. My parents didn't think there was any reason to fix it, but my bubbie, the great grandmother, she was adamant, so I got braces at 11. But at that time nobody really thoguht it a deformity, and people were sort of divided over whether it was appropriate for me to get braces to close the gap.

  10. i think pinker's an ideologue basically but at least he could think of something he knows.

  11. Yeah, Pinker is definitely not a leftist but he at least managed to pull from his concrete knowledge base and give a constructive, coherent account of what education should provide for a person, and why it's important to society. His type thinks education is the only way we can hope to correct for the natural cognitive biases everyone's born with. I'm more sympathetic to this than some...

The rest of it the video is what happens when people think that accumulated knowledge is the same thing is wisdom. The most inane platitudes are dressed up as the wisdom of the ages... it was almost like the kind of thing you'd expect to see if you'd filmed a bunch of mini pep talks from speakers at a corporate self-help convention.
