Bush massages Merkel

Words fail me. The video is here.

  1. Allow me to be the first to say OMFG. Is this going to be a scandal, though, I wonder? It should be. At least Clinton only ever behaved inappropriately with consenting partners.

  2. Nothing is a scandal any more, Mark - neither massacres of the innocent nor infantile bad manners. The media will play it for laughs, dependably. The more I look at "politics" these days, the more I'm struck by what's really beginning to look, and sound, like lunacy. Or maybe what seems like lunacy is just the kind of arrogance that's rooted in the consciousness of complete and permanent invulnerability.

When the 9/11 report came out, I remember saying, "If they can get away with this, they can get away with anything." QED. The War on Terror is also a war on sanity.

  3. Yeah – you can bet Merkel herself will downplay it – if she raised a fuss of course that would be a different matter.

Frankly, though, I think people are quite capable of getting more enraged about an inappropriate backrub than a million dead Iraqi babies.

    Q. What do you call a gorilla with a machine-gun?

    A. "Sir".

Remember Bush pawing the Chinese President in Washington, after the orchestra had played the wrong national anthem (Taiwan's)?

Remember him saying, after 9/11, "Lucky me, I hit the trifecta"? (A joke he repeated at least FIFTEEN times.)

    Remember Iraq's WMD?

The list could be extended indefinitely. I would love to believe that anything is even capable of constituting a scandal any more, and that the existence of scandal would suffice to ensure change.
